Tool Maker
Title:Tool Maker
Location:Colorado Springs, CO


This position is responsible for providing tooling and machining support for the Engineering and Manufacturing Departments. Duties also include assembling, inspecting and debugging tooling items produced in the Tool Shop; providing design and troubleshooting support; and producing and repairing injection molds from detailed drawings, sketches and verbal communications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned)

  • Follow Employee guidelines and Quality System Regulations as defined by Biomedical Innovations practices, policies and Standard Operating Procedures to insure that customer requirements and industry standards and or regulations are met.
  • Manufacture tooling accurately conforming to prints and or CAD models.
  • Interpret drawings, assembly specifications and tooling requests accurately. 
  • Operate tool room machines and equipment in a safe manner, and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Responsible for the good operation, maintenance, and upkeep of all tool room equipment.
  • Track time and materials used on tooling jobs, and ensure all are recorded accurately as required.
  • Test and debug tooling in its intended actual function to ensure compliance to design specifications.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and debugging operational issues with molds, tools and fixtures.
  • Assist in quoting new tooling projects.
  • Estimate timelines to complete tooling projects.
  • Operate lifting equipment.
  • Work with direct supervisor to support the achievement of departmental and company objectives.
  • Work within 5S methodologies to maintain workplace to highest standards.
  • Abide by all safety and security rules set forth by the company and regulatory agencies
  • Regular attendance

Qualifications and Experience
  • Must be familiar with metal working and production equipment, including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, cut off and band saws and sinker EDM.
  • Proficient with cad software (Solid Works), Master Cam and CNC programming.
  • Ability to use standard Microsoft Office programs.
  • Familiar with ANSI and ISO drawing standards / practices and standard tool room inspection equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages and the applications of basic Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • An understanding of mold making and tool room practice techniques and processes, as well as various raw materials and their uses
  • AS degree in machining or mechanical engineering a plus.
  • Certified apprenticeship program or equivalent training, education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Mold Maker or Tool Maker.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, high-stress environment (crucial).
  • Knowledge of both theoretical and practical aspects/techniques/tools of program management; SCRUM experience favored. 
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills required to read specifications, engineering drawings, and development/legal documents.
  • Robust interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Mechanical ability; experience with calipers and other measuring equipment.
  • Proven experience in people management, strategic planning, risk management, and change management.
  • Detail oriented and accurate.
  • Accountable, dependable, and adaptable personality characteristics.
  • Ability to cohesively work with a group/team; ability to work as an individual.
  • Analytical, tactical, influential, and leadership skills required.
  • Decisive decision making skills; strong delegation skills.
